Dear Business Partner:

The Westlake Information Technology Academy is currently recruiting for their mentor program for the 2009-2010 school year. We are in need of approximately 20 mentors. Our students are interested in the following technologies: Video game production, computer programming, web design, computer networking, graphic arts, advertising, video and music editing, television and radio production, medical technology, and software development.

The mentor program is designed to generate enthusiasm among students, teachers, and industry partners alike. Employees at local industries are paired with two 11th grade Academy students for a relationship that has three primary purposes:

To give the students a professional role model and a ‘friend in the industry’ whom they can approach for information and guidance concerning his or her career paths.
To give industry employees an understanding of what goes on in the academy and a chance to contribute to the educational process.
Give students a first-hand experience of the working world.

Mentor recruitment process:

Mentor application and screening. Mentors complete a written application, supply a personal work site reference and work in a regular business office with a minimum of 10 employees.
Mentor training. All mentors will receive a program packet outlining the goals and vision of the program in order to prepare for the mentor experience and attend an 30 minute orientation.
Job site visits. The protégé will be required to visit their mentor 3 times at their worksite for 3 hours between October and April. Dates are subject to the mentor’s availability.
Culminating Celebration. Mentors, protégé, parents and school personnel will attend a May event in which the mentor/ protégé will share their experiences with the program.

We ask that our mentors work in an office building with a minimum of 10 employees. If you are interested in being a mentor this year please complete the enclosed form and return it by FAX or mail to Laurie Looker at Westlake High School by September 30, 2009.
