CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES AND THE BILL OF RIGHTS
We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union…
 
“We the people” are the first words of the Constitution of the laws of the United States of America.  This document is the oldest constitution still in use by any government in the world.  Countries around the world have tried to duplicate it.  The first ten amendments to this Constitution are known as the Bill of Rights.  Freedom of speech, press, religion, and assembly are what most Americans mean when they say Constitutional rights.  The right to participate in our government by voting and holding office is also in the Constitution.  California recognizes the importance to all citizens of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights by reminding us of this document on the anniversary of its adoption as well as including the study of American government in 8th grade and high school Social Studies classes.

“The Constitution of the United States was adopted on September 17, 1787.  As an addendum, the Bill of Rights were included on December 15, 1791.
